about

This is one of the first songs I really wrote. It was very easy to do.

lyrics

I was born in a hospital where the children all sang until the bleachers got full
I was raised in a postcard town where the people force smiles can’t get lost in crowds
I was told about a virtuous life where possessions don’t matter but you’ll never have a wife
I was scolded by authority at a very young age they just snapped at me

And honestly, I’ve thought of living in a towering tree
Where there’s no billboards and no press disease
No silly Gods that are forced upon me

And I’d pledge to tend to it so passionately
Despite the army that would condescend me
Despite the army that would

Never mind you sit down and eat your food
And thank the man that smiles and serves it to you

I am guided by autonomous force pulls me further, ever further from the trodden course
I will grieve for the working folk who punch in and punch out without a passion or a hope
I have trouble seeing truth in laws when the biggest perpetrator is their own damn flaws
I won’t settle for an academic plan I can educate myself with any knowledge I demand.

And honestly, I’ve thought of living in a towering tree
Where there’s no pressure and no time disease
Where things unravel at the speed that they please

And I’d pledge to tend to it so passionately
Despite the army that would grab at my feet
Despite the army that would

Never mind you sit down and watch TV
And laugh and clap in sync with the canned jury

I will stand for the mentally declined when the others turn their head and then they feel just fine
I’m a victim of appearances wanna shatter every mirror before they poison my kids
I was tamed by a nameless girl in an orphanage where the taps don’t work
I’m not looking for a helping hand need a whole body to mend this man

And honestly, I’ve thought of living in a towering tree
Where there’s no structure and no label disease
Where life is governed by the afternoon breeze

And I’d pledge to tend to it so passionately
Despite the army that would secretly envy me

Never mind you sit down and show respect
And don’t expect reciprocated respect.

Alex Grantham Toronto, Ontario

Every last thing has to go.

Drawing equally on the lyrical density of 60s Dylan, the anti-establishment libertarian sentiments of punk-rock and the experimental leanings of a Jeff Tweedy or Scott Walker, Al Grantham weaves a unique tapestry of music and words. ... more
