about

In May of 2009 I got accepted into the Independent Music Production course at Seneca college. One of the assignments was to write a song that tied in with a movie we all watched. The movie was "Swingers". This was inspired by the golf course scene when two of the main characters are discussing the toils of being an aspiring actor. Being an aspiring musician I guess I could relate somewhat. I don't golf anymore though. This song is about 50% projection and 50% me. The poor painter down the street from the schawarma shop is really there. Hope you like it. Thanks to Nika Smith for engineering and playing organ.

lyrics

Send more money momma

I'm all broke

Four lanes of ambition

I'm a joker in a spoke

Michelle, ma belle

She will not call me

I'm hungry, hungover, hanging low

I won't be attending thanksgiving

I'm committed to my own plateau

Send more money momma

Keep feeding the fire

Tell me I'm exceptional

You sweet motherly liar

Send more money momma

I'm bombarded with bills

Sometime I'm gonna pay them

Just for the thrill

'Side the schawarma shop sits poor painter

He's well past artistic decline

With his foul clothes and filthy acrylics

I wonder if he'll ever draw a line

The billboard shows sexy young singer

But her stardom has come at a cost

That's not real performance you're hearing

Unless man your hearing is lost

Send more money momma

Keep feeding the fire

Tell me I'm exceptional

You sweet motherly liar

Send more money momma

Genius doesn't come cheap

I got awakened by reality

When I tried to put it to sleep

And I sometimes think of ancient days

When driven by passion untried

Shocked from what I saw float in

On the waves of adulthood's tide

Or sang the salesman to his potential clients

With survival funds in his eyes

The saint with the outstanding fines

Calls an end to the riots

I promise for you I'll keep singing

Though the songs that I sing they may change

From anthems of turbulent tangling

To shanties of protests estranged

What I fear is the fear of me fearing

But I don't want to go off the course

The D.J. says sing me a chorus

The banker dispenses the force

Send more money momma

Keep feeding the fire

I'm really really poor

And I got a bad tire

Send more money momma

I don't know what to do

I'm also quite upset

I'm upset about my shoe

Every last thing has to go.

Drawing equally on the lyrical density of 60s Dylan, the anti-establishment libertarian sentiments of punk-rock and the experimental leanings of a Jeff Tweedy or Scott Walker, Al Grantham weaves a unique tapestry of music and words. ... more
