about

Sometimes the best time to write about relationships is before you've ever been in one. I couldn't tell you anything now.

lyrics

People in relationships shrug a lot of things off and they earn master degrees in affections gone soft because they do not know what it is to be alone when the benefits of solitude have begun to erode and you are a crumbling, desperate man people in relationships inhibit frowns all the time because they’re channeling smiles from the weak and the deprived because a thought doesn’t begin and end in a tragedy and they’ve never had to re-decorate the purgatory to suit their personal tastes

now what if I told you I was a juvenile man? with a penchant for envy and a well of faulty plans? would you entertain the notion of ole’ pity? or would you draft yourself an army of robots and thieves? and poison every well?

People in relationships float on fairy powder clouds and they perceive blacks as purples and see blues as browns until the acquisition of a brand new character it’s centred around feelings that reside in the unsure so I know that they will smile and that they will frown

People in relationships develop unspoken signs and they stroke the idea of a silent decline until love is dismissed like a far expired trend with the wave of a hand and a turn of the head away it is sent to crash all pleasant parties in your mind

Now what if I told you I was most deserving man? with a purity of conscience in filth-ridden land? would you entertain the notion of good luck? or would you disregard compassion for a more fulfilling fuck? and tell yourself that I’ll be coming around again?

People in relationships drop the anchor to the shore and they blur the ambition that they use to distort succumb to rules and regulations that suffocate despise the idiosyncrasies with which they used to relate until they’re living with a stranger and a foe

People in relationships can’t predict the dénouement and they think that they know what they think they oughta want until wants are replaced by the resurrection of needs “I can’t believe that he or she has changed so much” - please! You should have known that this is not a field of human expertise.

Now what if I told you to forget all the above? and realize that in a lifetime there is joy and there is blood? would you entertain the notion of a dance? would you laugh and drink and dine with me? would you give me a chance? or would you walk off looking pretty once again?

Alex Grantham Toronto, Ontario

Every last thing has to go.

Drawing equally on the lyrical density of 60s Dylan, the anti-establishment libertarian sentiments of punk-rock and the experimental leanings of a Jeff Tweedy or Scott Walker, Al Grantham weaves a unique tapestry of music and words. ... more
